How To Encourage Yourself In The Lord.

So many times we want someone to get down in the ditch and commiserate with us in our situation.  However, this is not what Jesus did nor taught.  He came to give His life for us, and to teach us how to live above all the circumstances of life, including death!  I’m going to show you how to encourage yourself in the Lord.
Today, you may be facing some tough life situations, and maybe you don’t know where to turn.  Usually, when we don’t know what to do and are desperate we start asking for others to pray for us.  Now, there’s nothing wrong with asking for prayer, but let’s remember that James told us we must come and ask God for His wisdom.  We must all eventually come to a point where we understand that we have been given authority and power over our circumstances.  Will you stand in faith and believe God to get out of the situation you’re in?  The devil is truly seeking whom he may devour.  And some of us seem to be falling prey to his tactics.  But the apostle Paul warned us not to be unaware of the enemy’s devices.  This means that we’re not to fall prey to his schemes.  You have a plan from above already on how to stand and fight the good fight of faith regardless of what may come your way!

You  can’t sit there quietly wishing your problems away

sitting-head-on-kneeThrough the book of Acts, we can see how the apostle Paul overcame the odds, whether shipwreck or beaten and left for dead, or bitten by a poisonous snake.  In his epistles, he boldly declares that we are more than conquerors and overcomers through Christ.  As long as we’re willing to stand in the Lord and trust Him we will overcome every situation.  But many times we sit there quietly pondering in our minds how we’ll overcome our situation.  Friend, this is not the right stance!  You can’t sit there quietly wishing your problems away.  Stop playing the different scenes in your head how you’re coming out.  You know all too well in the natural there’s no easy way out of the mess or issues you’ve come to deal with, either by your own doing or by what you were dealt.
But let me remind you of this:  It is for the glory of God that you are in these situations.  What do I mean?  This is what Jesus answered when they asked Him why a young man was born blind!  His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened that the works of God would be displayed in him.   John 9:2-3  God would get glory through the young man’s healing even though He wasn’t the cause of his blindness.  So, let me remind you that “all things work together for GOOD to them that love God.” Romans 8:28.  There’s more in the context of this scripture, but the point is you will see the light of day out of the darkness that might have enshrouded you at this stage.

Stop talking about the circumstances

gossiping-people2It’s time for you to encourage yourself like David did under the worst of circumstances.  Ephesians 6 tells us how to do this!  If you’re willing to stand with the armor and not faint under the circumstances you will eventually win!  But not without opening your mouth to pray!  You have a choice to pray in the Spirit as Paul suggests because it’s your secret weapon.  You also have the sword of the spirit which is the word of God that better be coming out of your mouth.
To encourage yourself, you have to stop talking about the circumstances and start talking to them!  You have authority to change your circumstances.  Death and Life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.  You may have made a mess of things which explains why you’re disoriented, and disgruntled and discouraged at this point, but your life is not over.  You have in your mouth the ability to turn the ship around!  Yes, YOU DO!  You have been given dominion and authority, so you don’t have to live under the circumstances.

Speak to the mountains in your way

You may have received an eviction notice from your landlord, or a word from the doctor that your situation is irreversible or terminal.  It doesn’t matter what the situation looks like there’s a God who is greater than your situation, and will give you wisdom on how to handle the situation.  Ask Moses.  He led the Israelites to the Red Sea, with mountains on both sides and the Egyptian army coming behind them.  Standing in front of the Red Sea, Moses opened his mouth to tell the children of Israel not to worry and that God was going to take care of them.  He is able!
13 But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORDwhich He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. 14 “The LORD will fight for you while you keep silent.” Exodus 14:13-14
Moses at Red SeaHowever, God reminded Moses to stop praying to Him and open His mouth and speak to the circumstance!  He was to lift his staff, and command the sea to open up.
15 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward. 16 “As for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall go through the midst of the sea on dry land. Exodus 14:15-16
When Moses spoke to the circumstance and didn’t panic, the children of Israel went through on dry ground, but the Egyptian army drowned when they followed suit.  The point is, you can look at your circumstances and say God is going to do something about it, or you can use your God-given authority and dominion and speak to the mountain of debt, sickness or any other mountain that’s in your way!  Open your mouth and speak to the mountains in your way!  This is one of the ways you’re going to Encourage Yourself In The Lord!
