There are so many things we’ve ascribed to being a disciple, and as I read His word and fellowship with His Spirit, I’m reminded that being a disciple is the first requirement towards maturing as a servant and son and eventually a friend of His to becoming a true bride in the greatest covenant there is. If you never become His disciple you can’t claim that you’re a servant and a son, regardless of how much you say you give yourself for Him.
Anyway, these thoughts started running through my mind. If you continue in my word you shall be my disciple. But being a disciple is not simply reading the word, though that’s part of it. It’s simply assembling with other believers, going to church, though that’s part of it. It’s not only praying in unknown tongues, though it’s part of it. It’s not simply worshiping the Lord, though that’s part of it. It’s not simply laying hands on the sick and seeing them recover, though that’s part of it.
Being a disciple requires that you continue in His word. So the question came: Are you a disciple? Are you My disciple? Are you continuing in my word? I know you’re reading the word and your praying but are you doing what it says? The great Commission is the mandate, but how many are actually going and taking the world and turning it upside down for the King so they realize that we’re fighting a war that’s already been won. His great wish is that none should perish because of His great love.
This message can only be carried by disciples. Being a disciple puts you in a position to become an apostle – a sent one, a minister of reconciliation, willing to bring the message to those who may never have heard of the King and His goodness. Many have already heard of the King, but unfortunately they’re ascribing so many bad things that have happened in their lives to His doing when “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.” James 1:17 ASV The King is good and His goodness endures forever. He doesn’t change.
So, that morning, as I lay in bed thinking of all the requirements of being a disciple, the most important one was to continue in His word. He himself told us the cost of being a disciple. It will cost you everything. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26,27 NIV
Indeed, you better be about carrying your cross daily knowing that you’re living in a fallen world where you can bring Heaven to earth because it’s accessible now due to the Son’s redemption act! You are redeemed and you have one responsibility and that’s to become His disciple and bring the world to an encounter, a true experience, with His great love.
Are you a disciple? Only you know whether you’re living the life, and whether you need the Helper to direct you daily as you take your responsibility to seat in heavenly places and declare on earth what shall be as it already is in Heaven. If you continue in my word, then you are indeed be My disciple.
